SenseTime’s First Collaboration with SUNeVision to Create AI Education Cloud promotes AI Education and Talent Development in Hong Kong

SenseTime, one of the world-leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies, and SUNeVision, Asia’s renowned data centre service provider, today announce their first collaboration in forging an AI-oriented education cloud tailor made for primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong that empowers them with stable and reliable AI education solutions at remarkably competitive costs and high efficiency. Combining SenseTime’s state-of-the-art technology for computer vision and deep learning and SUNeVision’s stable and reliable data centre service, the cloud enables schools to develop AI curricula at an early stage to significantly raise learning efficiency and equip students with skills to respond to future challenges and opportunities. The two companies signed a formal agreement today that marks the start of the collaboration.

Deeply connected with social developments for tomorrow such as big data and smart city, AI is set to play a crucial role in future information technologies. But AI is only made possible by the power of supercomputers whose cost and manpower requirements may be forbidding for most schools. Under the collaboration agreement, SenseTime will develop an education cloud in SUNeVision’s high-tier data centre, MEGA Plus, that will provide the academia with computing and data storage capabilities at supercomputing level, significantly lowering expenses and resources incurred from AI-related courses, and improve stability of the education platform system, while students can learn efficiently as they enjoy the most advanced AI education resources right at the school with personalised materials such as course content, learning notes and individual progress ready on the cloud. Related information can be seamlessly retrieved and facilitates instant interactive exchange between teachers and students. All of this would lay an important foundation for the next generation in mastering vision analytics and other AI technologies in the future.

Hailong Shang, Managing Director of SenseTime Hong Kong & Head of Education Business Unit, says: “We believe SUNeVision’s leading and reliable data centre service, together with strong connectivity and professional operations support, will facilitate us in providing a more efficient AI education service to local primary and secondary schools.” Mr Shang also calls for introducing AI education into regular curricula. “The time for AI has come. Not long from now, AI will operate the city as a utility like water and power and will be as ubiquitous as computer and the internet today. Popularising AI education serves to help the next generation establish a rudimentary sense about AI, in order to prepare themselves for future opportunities and challenges.”

Raymond Tong, SUNeVision Chief Executive Officer, says: “As a pioneer in AI, SenseTime leads the industry in research, application and training. SUNeVision is delighted to collaborate with SenseTime in this meaningful project and contributes to nurturing Hong Kong’s future AI and technology talents. In addition, developing the education cloud at MEGA Plus reinforces the data centre’s major goal. MEGA Plus is a purpose-built facility on land designated for high-tier data centre use by the Hong Kong government. It represents SUNeVision’s support of Hong Kong government’s initiatives in technological advancement, and in developing Hong Kong into a digital hub in Asia Pacific.”

With a mission to popularise AI education, SenseTime published the world’s first AI textbooks for high school students last April, then extended its effort in developing education solutions for secondary school students including the SenseStudy platform, which facilitates students to learn about coding and basic tools in AI, and AI labs. Further, SenseTime has joined hands with The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong to organise a series of activities intending to encourage students explore AI technologies and enhance their knowledge and interest in AI. These efforts are conducive to an ambience of AI learning in society at large.
